D. Rowe Award in Perinatal Cardiology
(Presented by the Society for Pediatric
Research)
The Richard D. Rowe Award in Perinatal
Cardiology was established by colleagues,
trainees, and friends of Dr. Rowe to mark his many
personal achievements, commitment to academic excellence,
integrity and humility. The winning candidate is selected
by a committee from the Society for Pediatric Research on
the basis of both the quality of the work presented in the
abstract and the information contained in the sponsoring
letter. The award carries a monetary prize of $1,000.
Candidates must fulfill the following
conditions:
- A completed award application form.

- Have M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent
degree and be within 3 years of completion of
post-doctoral education (individuals who are in the
process of obtaining such an education, but have
already completed original work are encouraged to
apply.
- First authorship on an abstract
submitted to the annual meeting of the Pediatric
Academic Societies in the field of perinatal
cardiovascular development that has been accepted for
presentation.
- Check the appropriate box on the 2003
PAS abstract form.
- A sponsoring letter from a member of
the Society for Pediatric Research. This letter should
contain a short appraisal of the candidate's
accomplishments and potential and clearly outline
his/her participation in the work contained in the
abstract.
- A copy of the candidate's curriculum
vitae.
- The awardee will present the study at
the PAS Annual Meeting.
- Abstract must be received by December
6, 2002; supplemental materials, by December 10.

The David G. Nathan Award in
Hematology/Oncology was established by the
colleagues, trainees, and friends of Dr. Nathan. The award
marks Dr. Nathan's many achievements in every aspect of academic
pediatrics and pediatric hematology, but most particularly
celebrates his mentorship of young physicians during the
formative years of their research careers.
The winning candidate is selected by a committee from the
Society for Pediatric Research on the quality of the work
presented in the abstract. The award carries a monetary
prize of $1,000.
Candidates must fulfill the following
conditions:

engaged in pediatric research. These awards are designed
to encourage pediatricians in training to pursue careers
in academic pediatrics. Winning candidates are selected by
a committee from the Society for Pediatric Research based
on the quality of the work presented in the abstract. Each
award ($1,000) is given annually to one to three
individuals in each category at the Pediatric
Academic Societies' Annual Meeting.
Student must submit abstract prior to
the student receiving his/her M.D. or Ph.D.
Candidates must fulfill the following

APS/SPR
TRAVEL GRANTS
(Presented by the American Pediatric
Society and Society for Pediatric Research)
The Society for Pediatric Research and
American Pediatric Society will award travel grants in the
amount of $500 plus complimentary meeting registration to
attend the PAS Annual Meeting. Travel grants are possible
to at least fifteen runner-ups among the SPR House
Officer, Fellow Basic, Fellow Clinical, and Richard D.
Rowe Award categories only. Travel grants will be awarded
during the SPR Presidential Plenary Session in Seattle,
Washington.
Candidates must fulfill the following
conditions:
- Must apply for one of the following
SPR Awards: House Officer, Fellow Basic, Fellow
Clinical, or Richard D. Rowe Award.

Ludwig–Seidel
Award
(Presented by the
Ambulatory Pediatric Association)
This award recognizes the abstract that
represents the best research project in pediatric
emergency medicine in which a PEM fellow is a lead author.
The application involves the following:
- A completed award application form.
APA Award Application Form
- Checking the appropriate box on the
abstract form.
- The nominee must be the first author
of the abstract.
- Submitting a 500–1000-word expanded
version of the abstract. The overview should include
the project’s rationale, method of implementation,
and evaluation. There should be some discussion of the
project’s importance and potential impact. During
the judging process strong emphasis is placed on the
extent to which the process is innovative, and the
degree to which there is an objective evaluation
component.
- Abstract must be received by December
6, 2002; supplemental materials, by December 10.
A committee from the Ambulatory
Pediatric Association selects the winning candidate. The
work is presented during the Emergency Medicine Special
Interest Group meeting, and the award is presented during
the APA Business Meeting.

Young Investigator Award
(Presented by the
American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology)
Criteria:
Young Investigator Award
recipients are selected each year by the Program Committee
of ASPH/O, with input, if required, from the Executive
Committee.
Nominees for the Young Investigator
Award are solicited each year during the Call for
Abstracts. Qualifications for Young Investigator Award
candidates are as follows:
- Less than 4 years having elapsed
since the completion of the standard three-year
pediatric hematology–oncology fellowship.
- The individual has conducted
high-quality clinical or laboratory research on a
project (described in the abstract) in which he or she
participated actively in the design, conduct, and data
analysis.
- The candidate is committed to a
career that includes clinical and/or laboratory
investigation in pediatric hematology–oncology.
The application process for a Young
Investigator Award includes the following:
- Submission of an abstract submitted
with the young investigator designated as the first
author.
- A completed award application form.
ASPH/O Award Application Form
- Expectation that the young
investigator nominee, if successful, will present from
the podium his or her paper at the next joint ASPHO/PAS
meeting.
- Submission of a curriculum vitae
along with the abstract.
- Submission of a one-to-two page
statement of career goals along with the abstract.
- A supporting letter from the training
program director or clinical or laboratory mentor
attesting to the fact that the Young Investigator
Award nominee has played a major if not the key role
in the conduct of the research project and confirming
the candidate's promise as a young investigator in
pediatric hematology–oncology.
The abstract must be received by December
6, 2002, and supplemental materials must be received by
December 10, 2002.
In general, there will be two ASPH/O
Young Investigator Awards presented each year, one in the
area of hematology and one in oncology. The awards may be
granted in recognition of either clinical or laboratory
research. If the number and/or quality of applications for
the award in a particular year is limited, a single Young
Investigator Award will be made.
