SPR Richard D. Rowe Award in Perinatal Cardiology
(Presented by the Society for Pediatric Research)

The Richard D. Rowe Award in Perinatal Cardiology was established in 1988 by colleagues, trainees and friends of Dr. Rowe to honor his many personal achievements, commitment to academic excellence, integrity and humility.  The award carries a monetary prize of $1,000. The winning applicant is selected on the basis of both the quality of the work presented in the abstract and the information contained in the sponsoring letter. 

  • Check the appropriate box in the PAS abstract submission program and complete the online application form.

  • Have M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent degree and be within 3 years of completion of post-doctoral education (individuals who are in the process of obtaining such an education, but have already completed original work are encouraged to apply.

  • First authorship on an abstract submitted to the annual meeting of the Pediatric Academic Societies in the field of perinatal cardiovascular development. The abstract must be accepted for presentation at the PAS Annual Meeting to be considered.

  • Upload a sponsoring letter from a member of the Society for Pediatric Research. This letter should contain a short appraisal of the candidate's accomplishments and potential and clearly outline his/her participation in the work contained in the abstract.

  • Upload the candidate's curriculum vitae.

  • The nominee must present the study at the PAS Annual Meeting in a related session.

  • Abstract and supplemental materials must be received by the PAS abstract submission deadline.

SPR David G. Nathan Award in Hematology/Oncology
(Presented by the Society for Pediatric Research)

The David G. Nathan Award in Basic Research by a Fellow was established in 2000 by the colleagues, trainees, and friends of Dr. Nathan to honor his achievements in every aspect of academic pediatrics. The winning candidate is selected by a committee from the Society for Pediatric Research on the quality of the work presented in the abstract. The award carries a monetary prize of $1,000.

Eligibility Criteria:  Work must be submitted prior to the completion of fellowship.

Candidates must fulfill the following conditions:

  • Check the appropriate box in the PAS abstract submission program and complete the online application form.

  • First authorship on an abstract submitted to the Pediatric Academic Societies' (PAS) Annual Meeting in the field of pediatric hematology/oncology.  The abstract must be accepted for presentation at the PAS Annual Meeting to be considered.

  • Upload a letter from the senior investigator or sponsor that includes a statement that the work was performed by the nominee and fully addresses the role the candidate had in the work.

  • The nominee must present the study at the PAS Annual Meeting in a related session.

SPR Fellow's Basic Research Award
(Fellow must submit and present abstract prior to the completion of fellowship)

The Society for Pediatric Research annually honors students, house officers and fellows engaged in pediatric research. These awards are designed to encourage pediatricians in training to pursue careers in academic pediatrics. Winning candidates are selected by a committee from the Society for Pediatric Research based on the quality of the work presented in the abstract. Each award ($1,000) is given annually to one to three individuals.

Eligibility Criteria: Work must be submitted and presented prior to the completion of fellowship.

SPR House Officer Research Award   
(House Officer must submit abstract prior to the completion of residency)
(Presented by the Society for Pediatric Research)

The Society for Pediatric Research annually honors students, house officers and fellows engaged in pediatric research. These awards are designed to encourage pediatricians in training to pursue careers in academic pediatrics. Winning candidates are selected by a committee from the Society for Pediatric Research based on the quality of the work presented in the abstract. Each awardee will receive a $1,000 award.  One to three awards will be given.

Eligibility Criteria: Resident must submit and present abstract prior to the completion of residency.

Candidates must fulfill the following conditions:

  • Check the appropriate box in the PAS abstract submission program and complete the online application form.

  • First authorship on an abstract submitted to the Pediatric Academic Societies' (PAS) Annual Meeting. The abstract must be accepted for presentation at the PAS Annual Meeting to be considered.

SPR Student Research Award
(Student must submit abstract prior to the student receiving his/her B.S./B.A., M.D., M.D./Ph.D. or Ph.D.)
(Presented by the Society for Pediatric Research)

The Society for Pediatric Research annually honors students, house officers and fellows engaged in pediatric research. These awards are designed to encourage pediatricians in training to pursue careers in academic pediatrics. Winning candidates are selected by a committee from the Society for Pediatric Research based on the quality of the work presented in the abstract. Each awardee will receive a $1,000 award.  Three to six awards will be given; one to two in each of the categories below:

  • M.D./Ph.D. and Ph.D. Students

  • Medical Students

  • High School and College Students

Eligibility Criteria:

  • First authorship on an abstract submitted to the Pediatric Academic Societies' (PAS) Annual Meeting.  The abstract must be accepted for presentation at the PAS Annual Meeting to be considered.

PAS Travel Grants
(Presented by the Pediatric Academic Societies)

The Pediatric Academic Societies will award travel grants in the amount of $500 plus complimentary meeting registration to attend the PAS Annual Meeting. Travel grants are possible to runner-ups among the House Officer, Fellow's Basic, Fellow's Clinical, and Richard D. Rowe Award categories only. Indicate your interest by checking the PAS Travel Grant box in the online submission program when applying for one of those awards.

APA Ludwig-Seidel Award
(Presented by the Ambulatory Pediatric Association)

This award recognizes the abstract that represents the best research project in pediatric emergency medicine in which a PEM fellow is a lead author.

The application involves the following:

  • Check the appropriate box in the PAS abstract submission program and complete the online application form.

  • The nominee must be the first author of the abstract.

  • Upload a 500-1000-word expanded version of the abstract. The overview should include the project's rationale, method of implementation, and evaluation. There should be some discussion of the project's importance and potential impact. During the judging process strong emphasis is placed on the extent to which the process is innovative, and the degree to which there is an objective evaluation component.

  • Abstract and supplemental materials must be received by the abstract submission deadline.

A committee from the Ambulatory Pediatric Association selects the winning candidate and the award is presented during the APA Business Meeting.

ASPHO Young Investigator Award
(Presented by the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology)

Criteria:

  • Young Investigator Award recipients are selected each year by the Program Committee of ASPHO, with input, if required, from the Executive Committee.

  • Nominees for the Young Investigator Award are solicited each year during the Call for Abstracts. Qualifications for Young Investigator Award candidates are as follows:

  1. Less than 4 years having elapsed since the completion of the standard three-year pediatric hematology-oncology fellowship.

  2. The individual has conducted high-quality clinical or laboratory research on a project (described in the abstract) in which he or she participated actively in the design, conduct, and data analysis.

  3. The candidate is committed to a career that includes clinical and/or laboratory investigation in pediatric hematology-oncology.

The application process for a Young Investigator Award includes the following:

  • Submission of an abstract submitted with the young investigator designated as the first author.

  • Check the appropriate box in the PAS abstract submission program and complete the online application form       

  • Expectation that the young investigator nominee, if successful, will present from the podium his or her paper at the next joint ASPHO-PAS meeting.

  • Upload a curriculum vitae along with the abstract.

  • Upload a one-to-two page statement of career goals along with the abstract.

  • Upload a supporting letter from the training program director or clinical or laboratory mentor attesting to the fact that the Young Investigator Award nominee has played a major if not the key role in the conduct of the research project and confirming the candidate's promise as a young investigator in pediatric hematology-oncology.

  • The abstract and supplemental materials must be received by the PAS abstract submission deadline.

In general, there will be two ASPHO Young Investigator Awards presented each year, one in the area of hematology and one in oncology. The awards may be granted in recognition of either clinical or laboratory research. If the number and/or quality of applications for the award in a particular year is limited, a single Young Investigator Award will be made.

ASPHO Young Investigator Travel Stipend
(Presented by the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology)

Criteria:

  • Four Young Investigator Travel Stipends of $500 each will be awarded by the ASPHO Program Committee. Travel stipends will be awarded to fellows whose abstract submissions received the 4 highest scores in the blinded abstract review process. 

  • Candidates for the Young Investigator Travel Stipend are solicited during the Call for Abstracts. Qualifications for Young Investigator Award Travel Stipends are as follows:

  1. Fellow in a pediatric hematology/oncology program

  2. Abstract accepted for presentation at the joint ASPHO-PAS meeting

  3. Young Investigator Travel Stipend application form submitted online

The application process for a Young Investigator Travel Stipend includes the following:

  • Submission of an abstract with the young investigator designated as the first author.

  • Check the appropriate box in the PAS abstract submission program and complete the online application form

  • Upload a supporting letter from the training program director attesting to the applicant's fellowship status and role in the conduct of the research project described in the abstract.  

  • Expectation that the young investigator nominee, if successful, will present his or her paper at the next joint ASPHO/PAS meeting, either in a platform or a poster session, as designated by the ASPHO Program Committee.

The ASPHO Program Committee will identify the recipients of the travel stipends based on eligibility criteria and abstract ranking. Each travel stipend will be in the amount of $500. Award checks will be picked up at the annual meeting.  Up to 4 travel stipends will be awarded annually.

ASPN Trainee Research Awards
(Presented by the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology)

Two ASPN Trainee Research Awards will be given of equal value. Medical students, residents, or fellows who are pursuing actual combined clinical and research training toward becoming a pediatric nephrologist are eligible. One award will recognize the best clinical abstract and one, the best basic science abstract, based on the quality of the work.

The award consists of a $500 cash award, $750 for travel expenses, and free registration.  Presentation of the awards will take place at the ASPN reception.

Candidates for the Trainee Research Award are solicited during the Call for Abstracts. Qualifications for Young Investigator Award Travel Stipends are as follows:

  • Must be a medical student, resident or fellow pursuing combined clinical and research training toward becoming a pediatric nephrologist.

  • First authorship on an abstract submitted to the PAS/ASPN Annual Meeting in the field of pediatric nephrology that is accepted for presentation.

  • Awardees will be expected to present their work at one of the two nephrology "Free Communication" sessions at the annual ASPN/PAS meeting.

The application process for a Trainee Research Award includes the following:

  • Medical Students and Resident-Upload a document confirming your educational/training status.

  • Fellows-Upload a supporting letter from the training program director attesting to the applicant's fellowship status and role in the conduct of the research project described in the abstract.

  • Check the appropriate box in the PAS abstract submission program and complete the online application form

  • Complete submission packet must be RECEIVED as directed in the submission program.

The ASPN Research Committee will evaluate the abstracts based on their scientific merit.
