Visa/Passport Requirements

Borders and Customs

Canada has one of the most advanced customs organizations in the world, and our borders and the processes we have in place to manage them are absolutely critical to our ability to provide Canadians and visitors to Canada with the security and peace of mind they expect.

Visitors entering Canada must clear Canada customs border security upon entry. Canada is very strict with regard to criminality. Most minor criminal convictions will render an individual inadmissible. If that is the case, the person then has to obtain a "Temporary Resident Permit." This is a permit that allows a person to enter Canada even though he or she is inadmissible. For more information, go to www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/inadmissibility.html.

Entry into Canada
American visitors to Canada who cross the border by air will require a passport to re-enter the U.S. beginning January 8, 2007.

American visitors crossing the border by land and sea do not currently require passports. New regulations by the U.S. government will require passports for land crossings at a later date, likely June 2009. For now, visitors crossing by land (driving, bus tour) may be asked to verify citizenship and should therefore carry any one of the following documents: birth certificate, naturalization certificate, Green Card or passport. Photo identification is also required so visitors should carry their driver’s license or other photo ID with them.

For more information on the new U.S. government border initiatives, visit the U.S. State Department Travel web site.

To find out where to get your passport picture taken and how to download an application visit http://www.travel.state.gov/

Traveling From Countries Other Than the United States

Passports are required and in some cases, a visa may also be required. To learn whether you are from a country or territory whose citizens require visas in order to enter Canada, please visit the following website: www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas.html.

For further information: From outside Canada contact the Canadian Embassy, high commission or consulate. From within Canada call (888) 242-2100; from outside Canada (800) 992-7037.

Returning to other countries

Before leaving home, visitors from other countries should check the customs regulations of their country by contacting the appropriate government department.

Taxes

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a 6% tax that is charged on most goods and services sold or provided in Canada. And as we’re part of the Province of Ontario, purchases made in Toronto are also subject to the 8% Provincial Sales Tax (PST).

Tax Rebates for individuals
Foreign visitors to Canada can apply for a rebate on the GST that is paid on accommodation (up to 30 nights per visit), and on goods purchased in Canada and exported within 60 days of the purchase. Be sure to keep your receipts – you’ll need to have them validated by Canada Customs at the airport or border crossing when you leave.

For more information about the visitors’ tax refund and to obtain an application form, visit www.cra.gc.ca/visitors or call 1-800-668-4748 (within Canada) or 1-902-432-5608 (from outside Canada).
