2007 PAS Educational Scholars ProgramDeadline has passed for 2007

The Ambulatory Pediatric Association and AAP Community Pediatrics Training Initiative are co-sponsoring a new round of applications for the PAS Educational Scholars Program targeting present or future faculty in academic pediatrics with interest and experience in Community Pediatrics, who wish to build their skills in educational scholarship.

PAS Educational Scholarship Program-Cohort II- Community Pediatrics

Who should apply and how? This program targets present or future faculty in academic pediatrics who wish to build their skills in educational scholarship.  Last year, 30 Scholars began the three-year curriculum.  This year, the Community Pediatrics Training Initiative of the American Academy of Pediatrics is sponsoring a new cohort of 10 scholars who have a special interest in education and community pediatrics.  Applicants (or their mentors) must be a member of one of the Pediatric Academic Societies.  Applications are due on November 22, 2006. Application forms and detailed instructions can be found at http://www.ambpeds.org/certificationProgramESP2/workshops/main_application_menu.cfm.

What does the curriculum include? Briefly, the curriculum includes didactic sessions, PAS workshop reviews, and completion of a mentored project. Scholars will be expected to commit 10% FTE to the program in order to complete the full curriculum, including projects, over 3 years.

Didactic sessions. A core curriculum will be taught in three mini-courses, offered each year for three consecutive years on the final day of the PAS meeting. The courses will include both presentation of concepts and practical, hands-on activities with many opportunities for collegial interactions.

Workshop review. Over three years, Scholars must also participate in and thoughtfully evaluate six PAS workshops, symposia, or other organized educational activity at the PAS meeting. These will be selected to supplement the didactic curriculum.

Mentored projects. Scholars will conduct a mentored educational project, in most cases conducted at the Scholar’s home institution. Suitable projects will involve both educational scholarship and some aspect of education in community pediatrics, as defined by the AAP in its 2005 policy statement (Pediatrics 2005:  115:1092-4). For more information on community pediatrics, applicants are encouraged to visit the Community Pediatrics Training Initiative website at http://www.aap.org/commpeds/CPTI/default.htm.  Projects will be monitored every 6 months and progress will be shared with other Scholars. Projects must culminate in a peer-reviewed publication or a peer reviewed presentation at meetings of the PAS, AAMC, or an equivalent organization.

What are the requirements for obtaining a Faculty Development Certificate of Excellence in Educational Scholarship? Certificates will be given to Scholars who attend the full duration of the three mini-courses, submit the required workshop/educational session reviews, complete a mentored project, and document a peer reviewed publication or presentation that relates to it. More detailed program information can be found on the APA website: http://www.ambpeds.org: click on Education, and then on Educational Scholars Program.

Who is leading this program? This Educational Scholars Program is jointly sponsored by the Pediatric Academic Societies. Within the APA, the program is managed by the Ambulatory Pediatric Association’s Faculty Development Program Committee led by Constance Baldwin (constance_baldwin@urmc.rochester.edu) and Latha Chandran (lchandran@notes.cc.sunysb.edu). The Ambulatory Pediatric Association provided initial and ongoing funding for this program.  The Dyson Foundation through the American Academy of Pediatrics has provided funding for the new cohort of Scholars to be selected in Fall 2006, facilitated by David Keller (kellerd@ummuhc.org) and Alice Kuo (akuo24@ucla.edu).
