Session Number: 1115
Infection and the Neonatal Brain
PAS Topic Symposium
Vancouver Convention Centre ~ West Ballroom C

Target Audience: Target Audience: neurology, neonatology, infectious disease, international health, critical care, pharmacology.

Objectives: - Understand the pathophysiology of neonatal brain infections and identify new opportunities for diagnosis and therapeutic intervention[br]- Understand some of the prevention strategies and therapies that could provide additive benefit in conjunction with antiviral agents in newborns with brain infections

Chairs: Terrie E. Inder, Washington University in St. Louis, St. Louis, MO and Linda S. de Vries, Wilhelmina Children's Hospital, Utrecht, The Netherlands

The identification and treatment of neonatal brain infections has seen tremendous advances. There has been substantial progress in understanding the pathophysiology of neonatal meningitis as well as congenital and neonatal viral infections of the central nervous system (CNS) and identification of novel CNS pathogens. There is also increasing recognition of the mechanisms whereby systemic infection (sepsis) can adversely affect the developing brain. Many challenges remain in translating these advances into more effective anti-infectious and neuroprotective therapies.[br]This symposium will highlight recent advances in neonatal brain infections, emphasizing advances in diagnosis and management, and will provide an overview of current approaches to the identification and diagnosis of novel CNS pathogens. This symposium will also address the neurological care and follow-up of newborns with systemic infections that indirectly influence CNS integrity.
