Neonatal Neuroprotection Trials: Challenges and Opportunities
PAS Topic Symposium
Vancouver Convention Centre ~ West Ballroom A

Target Audience: Scientists and clinicians involved with neurology, neonatology, clinical trials, brain imaging, epidemiology, international health, critical care, pharmacology.

Objectives: - Identify new opportunities for therapeutic intervention of neonatal brain injury[br]- Understand clinical trial design for newborn brain protection including opportunities to study long-term outcomes and recovery

Chairs: Steven P. Miller, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada and Faye Silverstein, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI

The recent clinical trials that demonstrated the positive impact of therapeutic hypothermia on neurodevelopmental outcome represent pivotal landmarks in neonatal medicine. Although there has been substantial progress in implementing knowledge gleaned from these trials, much remains to be learned to optimize the neurodevelopmental outcomes of premature and term infants at risk for brain injury. Moreover, there is increasing recognition that many systemic neonatal disorders and their treatments can influence the developing brain. The important information gleaned from long-term follow-up studies is counter-balanced by the high costs incurred, and there is a compelling need to identify robust and reliable surrogate measures for neurodevelopmental outcomes. This symposium will highlight important themes that could guide development of future neonatal neuroprotection clinical trials. Speakers will highlight the challenges in clinical trial design and implementation, discuss approaches to integrate study of neurodevelopmental outcomes in treatment trials for systemic diseases, and identify opportunities for refinement of future trial design.
