Reflection has application to the 6 core ACGME competencies as it is central to eliciting and acting upon feedback from mentors, peers, patients and oneself. Effective use of reflection promotes lifelong learning which defines a competent physician of the 21st century. Through this workshop participants will develop skills in reflective practice applied to teaching and learning medicine. They will be offered a framework for the design of effective reflective exercises across the continuum of student, resident, fellow and faculty development training and a rubric for evaluation. Through large and small group exercises and through the use of video clips and role play exercises, participants will learn and practice the application of critical reflection to assessment of sample students reflections and the delivery of feedback using valid instruments. They will practice a tool used in clinical mindfulness to enhance skills in mentoring self-reflection. Participants will use scripted role plays of clinical encounters to practice reflection with learners. Attendees will leave with a toolbox for the design of reflective exercises to enhance feedback and evaluation.
