Leader: Kelly C. Komatz, Co-Leaders: Jeffrey Goldhagen, Hal Siden

As a result of advances in pediatrics, increasing numbers of children live with chronic and life-limiting/threatening conditions. Pediatric palliative care provides a philosophy and holistic approach to the delivery of community and hospital-based services to these children. Palliative care enhances quality of life, minimizes suffering, and optimizes the function of child and family. It is provided along the continuum of curative to end-of-life care and bereavement. Despite recognition of palliative and hospice medicine as a new pediatric subspecialty, few pediatricians are oriented to or have trained in palliative care. A didactic session will introduce the principles of pediatric palliative care practice. Participants will work through scenarios in small groups to define the current functionality of the PPCC in their community and identify elements necessary to establish a holistic system of care. These case-based scenarios will stimulate discussion on how an interdisciplinary palliative approach impacts a child and family. Participants will be provided the Pediatric National Hospice Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) Standards to develop a blue print for their community. Participants will then convene as a whole to discuss strategies to bring stakeholders together in their community and how to introduce the principles of pediatric palliative care into residency training. A resource list will be provided and other resources identified through group discussion.
