Learn the Latest in Pediatric Science at Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA – More than 7,500 leaders in academic pediatrics will gather in Vancouver, Canada, May 1-4 for the annual meeting of the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS).

Journalists will have access to hundreds of scientists who are conducting original research in children’s health. PAS represents an opportunity to learn about and discuss the latest scientific discoveries, often before they appear in peer-reviewed journals. The meeting addresses all aspects of children’s health, including basic and clinical sciences, translational and health services research, and clinical advances. The meeting will take place at the Vancouver Convention & Exhibition Centre.

Highlights of the 2010 meeting include:

  • Personal responsibility, sugar addiction and other factors in the obesity epidemic;
  • The role of endocrine disruptors on children’s health;
  • The latest research into autism spectrum disorders and implications for treatment;
  • Keynote address by John M. Balbus, MD, MPH, senior advisor for public health at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, on the impact of climate change on children’s health;
  • Lecture by Shinya Yamanaka, MD, PhD, the scientist who discovered how to turn human skin cells into embryonic-like stem cells, and the winner of the 2010 March of Dimes Prize in Developmental Biology;
  • A celebration of the Academic Pediatric Association’s 50th anniversary, including a keynote lecture by Catherine DeAngelis, editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association;
  • More than 3,000 scientific abstract presentations.

Journalists are invited to cover PAS and may register to attend the meeting at http://www.pas-meeting.org/2010Vancouver/press.asp. Journalists who wish to receive embargoed press releases on scientific abstracts in advance of the meeting should contact PAS Media Relations at 847-434-7877 or dlinchesky@aap.org or ssmartin@aap.org.
