Fellow’s Basic Research awards are designed to
encourage pediatricians in training to pursue

the work (basic research) presented in the
abstract. Each award ($1,000) is given annually
to one to three individuals.
The David G.
Nathan Award in Basic Research by a Fellow was
established in 2000 by the colleagues, trainees,
and friends of Dr. Nathan to honor his
achievements in every aspect of academic
pediatrics. The winning candidate is selected
based on the quality of the work (basic
research) presented in the abstract. The award
carries a monetary prize of $1,000 for a single
recipient. The awardee will be chosen from the
Fellow's Basic Research Award applicants.

This award recognizes the abstract that
represents the best research project in
pediatric emergency medicine in which a PEM
fellow is a lead author.
The application involves the following:

abstract. The overview should include the
project’s rationale, method of implementation,

there is an objective evaluation component.

Michael Shannon
Research Award
(Presented by the Academic Pediatric
Association)
This award will be granted to the best abstract
in the areas of pharmacology/toxicology, drug
reactions/events, substance use, environmental
health, disaster preparedness/response and
emergency medicine. Trainees and junior faculty
are especially encouraged to apply for this
prestigious award.
This research award is in memory of the life
achievements of Michael Shannon, MD, MPH, (1953
–2009). Dr. Shannon was a professor at Harvard
Medical School. He was the first
African-American to be named a full professor of
Pediatrics at the institution. (2004). Dr.
Shannon was also the first African American to
serve as a division chief at Children's Hospital
Boston and served as chief of both the emergency
medicine and clinical pharmacology departments.
He was considered the preeminent pediatric
toxicologist in the world. He was a prolific
writer, having published more than 50
peer-reviewed articles in major scientific
journals. He was lead editor of one of the
authoritative texts of medical Toxicology,
Haddad, and Winchester’s Clinical Management of
Poisoning and Drug Overdose, 4th Edition,
published in 2007. He was also Medical
Editor-in-Chief of ToxED, and Board Co-Chair of
that publication.

Silverman Lecture

Silverman Lectureship was established in 2006 by
the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Section on
Perinatal Pediatrics to honor Dr. Silverman. The
awarded will address evidence based medicine
and/or bioethics of the newborn. Dr Silverman

area in today’s research.
ASPN Trainee Research Awards

(Presented by the American Society of Pediatric
Nephrology)
Two ASPN Trainee Research Awards will be given
of equal value. Medical students, residents, or
fellows who are pursuing combined clinical and
research training towards becoming a pediatric
nephrologist are eligible. One award will
recognize the best abstract on patient-oriented
research and one the best basic science
abstract, based on the quality of the work. The
awards will consist of cash awards, partially
paid travel expenses, and complimentary
registrations. Candidates for the Trainee
Research Award will be solicited during the Call
for Abstracts.
Candidates must fulfill the following
conditions:

Must be a medical student,
resident or fellow pursuing

Award

Pediatric Nephrology)
The
ASPN will sponsor residents and selected other
non-fellow trainees to attend the upcoming ASPN/PAS
meeting.
Stipends to partially support travel will be
given on a competitive basis. In addition, the
ASPN supports the trainee registration fee for
the meeting. Applicants may be medical students,
1st or 2nd year pediatric residents (PL1-PL2),
or 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year med-peds resident
(PGY1-PGY3) in an ACGME-accredited pediatric
residency program.
Applications
must include the following:

agrees to accompany the trainee to the
meeting.
