SPR Richard D. Rowe Award in Perinatal Cardiology back to top
(Presented by the Society for Pediatric Research)

The Richard D. Rowe Award in Perinatal Cardiology was established in 1988 by colleagues, trainees and friends of Dr. Rowe to honor his many personal achievements, commitment to academic excellence, integrity and humility. The award carries a monetary prize of $1,000. The winning applicant is selected on the basis of both the quality of the work presented in the abstract and the information contained in the sponsoring letter.

  • Check the appropriate box in the PAS abstract submission program and complete the online application form.

  • Abstract and supplemental materials must be received by the PAS abstract submission deadline.

  • Have M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent degree and be within 3 years of completion of post-doctoral education (individuals who are in the process of obtaining such an education, but have already completed original work are encouraged to apply.)

  • First authorship on an abstract submitted to the annual meeting of the Pediatric Academic Societies in the field of perinatal cardiovascular development. The abstract must be accepted for presentation at the PAS Annual Meeting to be considered.

  • A sponsoring letter from a member of the Society for Pediatric Research that contains a short appraisal of the candidate's accomplishments and potential and clearly outline his/her participation in the work contained in the abstract.

  • Candidate's curriculum vitae.

  • The recipient must present the study at the PAS Annual Meeting in a related session.

SPR Fellow's Basic Research Award (including David G. Nathan Award)  back to top

The Society for Pediatric Research annually honors fellows engaged in pediatric basic research.

The Fellow’s Basic Research awards are designed to encourage pediatricians in training to pursue careers in academic pediatrics. Winning candidates are selected based on the quality of the work (basic research) presented in the abstract. Each award ($1,000) is given annually to one to three individuals.

The David G. Nathan Award in Basic Research by a Fellow was established in 2000 by the colleagues, trainees, and friends of Dr. Nathan to honor his achievements in every aspect of academic pediatrics. The winning candidate is selected based on the quality of the work (basic research) presented in the abstract. The award carries a monetary prize of $1,000 for a single recipient. The awardee will be chosen from the Fellow's Basic Research Award applicants.



Eligibility Criteria for Awards: Fellow must submit and present the abstract prior to the completion of fellowship.

Candidates must fulfill the following conditions:

  • Check the appropriate box in the PAS abstract submission program and complete the online application form.

  • Abstract and supplemental materials must be received by the PAS abstract submission deadline.

  • The abstract must be basic research.

  • First authorship on the abstract submitted to the Pediatric Academic Societies' (PAS) Annual Meeting. The abstract must be accepted for presentation at the PAS Annual Meeting to be considered.

  •  A letter from the senior investigator or sponsor that includes a statement that the work was performed by the nominee and fully addresses the role the candidate had in the work and why the caliber of this study is worthy for a national award.

The Society for Pediatric Research annually honors students, house officers and fellows engaged in pediatric clinical research. These awards are designed to encourage pediatricians in training to pursue careers in academic pediatrics. Winning candidates are selected based on the quality of the work (clinical or translational) presented in the abstract. Each award ($1,000) is given annually to one to three individuals.

The Academic Pediatric Association annually honors fellows engaged in pediatric research. These awards are designed to recognize research excellence by a fellow in the fields of general pediatrics (including public health, epidemiology, health policy, and underserved populations), health services research, education, adolescent medicine, child abuse, developmental/behavioral pediatrics, emergency medicine, and hospitalist medicine. The goal is to encourage pediatric trainees to pursue careers in academic general pediatrics. Awardees will be selected based on the quality of their submitted PAS abstract. Up to five individuals annually will receive an award ($500) and plaques for the honoree and honoree’s mentor.

The application involves the following:

  • Check the appropriate box in the PAS abstract submission program and complete the online application form

  • A support letter from the senior investigator or sponsor that includes a statement that the work was performed by the nominee, fully addresses the role the candidate had in the work, and justifies why the caliber of this study is worthy of a national award

  • Currently serving as a fellow and will not have completed fellowship program prior to the 2012 PAS meeting

  • The nominee must be the first author of the abstract, and the abstract must be accepted for presentation and presented at the 2012 PAS meeting

A special subcommittee of the Research Committee of the Academic Pediatric Association selects the winning candidate, and the award may be presented during the APA Research Committee.

APA Ludwig-Seidel Award back to top
(Presented by the Academic Pediatric Association)

This award recognizes the abstract that represents the best research project in pediatric emergency medicine in which a PEM fellow is a lead author.

The application involves the following:

  • Check the appropriate box in the PAS abstract submission program and complete the online application form.

  • The nominee must be the first author of the abstract.

  • Upload a 500–1000-word expanded version of the abstract. The overview should include the project’s rationale, method of implementation, and evaluation. There should be some discussion of the project’s importance and potential impact. During the judging process strong emphasis is placed on the extent to which the process is innovative, and the degree to which there is an objective evaluation component.

  • Abstract and supplemental materials must be received by November 17, 2011.

A committee from the Academic Pediatric Association selects the winning candidate.

APA Michael Shannon Research Award
(Presented by the Academic Pediatric Association)

This award will be granted to the best abstract in the areas of pharmacology/toxicology, drug reactions/events, substance use, environmental health, disaster preparedness/response and emergency medicine. Trainees and junior faculty are especially encouraged to apply for this prestigious award.

This research award is in memory of the life achievements of Michael Shannon, MD, MPH, (1953 –2009). Dr. Shannon was a professor at Harvard Medical School. He was the first African-American to be named a full professor of Pediatrics at the institution. (2004). Dr. Shannon was also the first African American to serve as a division chief at Children's Hospital Boston and served as chief of both the emergency medicine and clinical pharmacology departments. He was considered the preeminent pediatric toxicologist in the world. He was a prolific writer, having published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles in major scientific journals. He was lead editor of one of the authoritative texts of medical Toxicology, Haddad, and Winchester’s Clinical Management of Poisoning and Drug Overdose, 4th Edition, published in 2007. He was also Medical Editor-in-Chief of ToxED, and Board Co-Chair of that publication.

  • Eligible candidates are limited to individuals who are no more than 5 years out from the completion of their fellowship or last training and must indicate status on application.

  • The nominee must be the first author of the abstract.

AAP William A. Silverman Lecture back to top
(Presented by the American Academy of Pediatrics)

The William A. Silverman Lectureship was established in 2006 by the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Section on Perinatal Pediatrics to honor Dr. Silverman. The awarded will address evidence based medicine and/or bioethics of the newborn. Dr Silverman was a leader in both and each is an important area in today’s research.

ASPN Trainee Research Awards back to top
(Presented by the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology)

Two ASPN Trainee Research Awards will be given of equal value. Medical students, residents, or fellows who are pursuing combined clinical and research training towards becoming a pediatric nephrologist are eligible. One award will recognize the best abstract on patient-oriented research and one the best basic science abstract, based on the quality of the work. The awards will consist of cash awards, partially paid travel expenses, and complimentary registrations. Candidates for the Trainee Research Award will be solicited during the Call for Abstracts.

Candidates must fulfill the following conditions:

  • Must be a medical student, resident or fellow pursuing combined clinical and research training toward becoming a pediatric nephrologist.

  • First authorship on an abstract submitted to the ASPN/PAS Annual Meeting in the field of pediatric nephrology that is accepted for presentation.

  • Awardees will be expected to present their abstract at one of the nephrology “Free Communication” sessions at the annual ASPN/PAS meeting.

  • Presentation of the awards will take place at the Awards Luncheon.

Application Process:

  • Medical Students and Resident—Written confirmation of their educational/training status.

  • Submission of a completed ASPN Trainee Research Application Form (included with the PAS “call for abstracts”).

  • Complete submission packet must be RECEIVED as directed in the submission program.

The Pediatric Academic Societies will award travel grants up to $500 plus complimentary meeting registration to attend the PAS Annual Meeting. Travel grants are possible to runner-ups among the SPR Fellow’s Basic & Fellow’s Clinical Award categories only. Indicate your interest by checking the PAS Travel Grant box in the online submission program when applying for one of those awards. Up to 100 travel awards will be made in 2012.

ASPN Resident Travel Award back to top
(Presented by the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology)

The ASPN will sponsor residents and selected other non-fellow trainees to attend the upcoming ASPN/PAS meeting. Stipends to partially support travel will be given on a competitive basis. In addition, the ASPN supports the trainee registration fee for the meeting. Applicants may be medical students, 1st or 2nd year pediatric residents (PL1-PL2), or 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year med-peds resident (PGY1-PGY3) in an ACGME-accredited pediatric residency program.

Applications must include the following:

  • Recommendation by a member of the ASPN who agrees to accompany the trainee to the meeting.

  • Applicant’s curriculum vitae along with a 1-page statement from the candidate describing his/her interest and possible career plans in pediatric nephrology.

It is important that all of the requested documents are included when applying. Applicants must commit to attend the 3-day meeting if selected.

PES Human Growth Foundation Award back to top
(Presented by the Pediatric Endocrine Society formerly
Lawson Wilkins Pediatric Endocrine Society)

The Human Growth Foundation Award was established in 2007 to encourage Fellows training in pediatric endocrinology to pursue clinical and bench investigations that may lead to a better understanding of human growth. A one thousand dollar prize is awarded annually to the best growth related abstract submitted by a Fellow to the LWPES/PAS annual meeting.

Support Materials:

This new award will honour outstanding research achievements in global child health. We specifically invite nominations of researchers who have conducted their work in developing regions.

The award includes a $10,000 honorarium and travel expenses to attend the 2012 Pediatric Academic Societies’ Meeting in Boston, where the award will be presented and the award recipient will present a review of his/her work.
