PROGRAM
FORMATS
State of the
Art Plenary
A means of updating and solidifying understanding in interdisciplinary
areas of pediatric medicine. These sessions are also commonly forums for
the presentation of new developments and seminal advances in biomedical
research. They consist of invited lectures from international leaders in
the field and are designed to be of interest to a very broad range of
attendees. Pre-enrollment is not required.
Topic
Symposia
These programs address issues and controversies around topics of
interest to a particular audience. As such, they are generally focused
on a more specific topic than the State of the Art sessions. Topic
Symposia consist of 3-4 lectures and allow time for active audience
discussion. Topic Symposia run concurrent with the original science
platform sessions and poster symposia. Pre-enrollment is not required.
Hot
Topics
These symposia focus on areas of rapid clinical discovery and excitement
and should address "Hot Topics", controversial issues and seek
to stimulate new areas of research or interactions for participants.
Time is scheduled for active audience participation. Pre-enrollment is
not required.
Mini Courses
These programs address important, relevant topics of interest to all
attendees from trainees to junior faculty to more senior faculty.
Usually targeted to new, broad-based clinical strategies or techniques,
which are not specific for any specific discipline or sub-set of
participants. The emphasis is on practical and useful information for
the practicing physician or provider of care. These programs are
designed to be highly interactive. Pre-enrollment is not required.
Special
Interest Groups
SIGS are informal sessions
organized around specific areas of interest to academic and community
pediatricians. Each session is planned by the SIG Chair and the sessions
range in format from informal discussions to guest speakers to research
presentations. Contact the specific SIG chair if you would like more
information. Attendance is open to any attendee who is interested.
Pre-enrollment is not required.
Educational
Seminars
TICKET
These small interactive training seminars address practical topics of
concern for trainees and junior scholars. Some seminars focus on issues
for the more senior practitioner, investigator, or academic leader.
Attendance is limited to make the sessions highly interactive. No fee
is required but pre-enrollment is essential for these sessions.
Workshops
TICKET
Workshops are selected using a peer review process; the format of the
workshops usually includes a combination of didactic presentations,
interactive discussions, and hands-on techniques depending on the topic
presented. Attendance is limited to make the sessions highly
interactive. No additional fee is required but pre-enrollment is essential
for these sessions.
Original
Science Presentations
These sessions are the heart of the program and give the membership,
guests and trainees of the Societies an opportunity to present their own
original work. The format of presentations varies from platform oral
presentations of 10 minutes with 5 minutes for audience discussion, to
poster symposia of 10-12 grouped posters with viewing and formal
discussion periods, to the general poster sessions where the bulk of the
original research at the meeting is presented. The oral presentations
and poster symposia are selected and assembled on the basis of their
thematic content or as part of traditional sub-specialty sessions by the
multi-disciplinary program committee with the help of a large group of
abstract reviewers drawn from the membership of all three participating
societies.
Original
Science Topics
Scheduling of these topics and/or other related topics will be
determined in early February. Check this website for a complete schedule
of these sessions.

Baltimore is an exciting city with charming neighborhoods, ethnic and
cultural diversity, Chesapeake Bay cuisine and a wealth of history.
Baltimore’s perfect blend of the old and new make the city’s urban
renewal an American success story.
Baltimore
is enjoying a second renaissance with a new wave of development, which
begins at the Inner Harbor. Several new attractions have opened and more
are on the way. In addition, well-known attractions are expanding,
offering new and exciting exhibits. Baltimore is a fantastic place to
visit with its countless attractions and activities for all ages.
Convenience is a characteristic you’ll find unique to Baltimore. It’s
easy to get around as most of the hotels are within walking distance of
the attractions, restaurants and neighborhoods. If you don’t want to
walk, a water shuttle offers easy transportation to different waterfront
communities and attractions around the city. With a wide array of
diverse and interesting attractions, visitors won’t be at a loss for
something to do.
Climate
Spring weather is typically 50 to 70 degrees
Fahrenheit during the day and cooler in the evenings. As "April
showers bring May flower", umbrellas are recommended.
Attractions
The Inner Harbor area is the crown jewel of Baltimore with the newly expanded
Baltimore Convention Center, which will serve as host for the 2001 PAS Annual
Meeting. The Inner Harbor is a scenic and festive waterfront area with the PAS
hotels and Convention Center within walking distance of dozens of shops,
restaurants, outdoor cafes and attractions including the National Aquarium, the
Maryland Science Center and Camden Yards, home of the Baltimore Orioles baseball
team. In addition, charming historic neighborhoods surround the Inner Harbor
including Little Italy and Fell’s Point, the oldest section of Baltimore with
cobblestone streets, unique shops and restaurants.
Other attractions include Port Discovery; the
third-largest children’s museum in the nation with interactive exhibit
space designated to help children discover their dreams and aspirations
through investigative learning with fun exhibits.
Baltimore’s vast array of cultural and artistic
treasurers will delight even the most discerning art lover. Spend the
day touring the Mount Vernon Cultural District. A neighborhood with
parks, fountains, statues and a variety of unique art galleries located
on Charles Street, just a few blocks from the harbor. You won’t want
to miss the opportunity to take in some of the city’s world-class
museums including Walters Art Gallery, The Hackerman House, the
Contemporary Museum, The Peabody Conservatory, the oldest music
conservatory in the U.S. and The Baltimore Museum of Art. A truly unique
art museum found in Baltimore is the American Visionary Art Museum. This
new national museum highlights exceptional original works of art created
by intuitive, self-taught artists.
For those of you who prefer to "shop til you
drop", Baltimore has it all! If you love antiques, start your day
along Baltimore’s Antique Row on Howard or at Federal Hill and just a
few blocks away you’ll find the Antique Warehouse, Baltimore’s
largest antique center. Catch a water taxi to Fell’s Point a favorite
for those shopping for antiques or just unusual and fun gifts. The
nations oldest maritime community, Fell’s Point offers cobblestone
streets, quaint shops galleries and pubs. At the Inner Harbor visit
Harborplace and The Gallery, which feature shops and restaurants right
on the waterfront.
Entertainment
and Dining
You will be delighted with street
entertainers and live entertainment found at the Inner Harbor on the Waterfront.
Alternatively, enjoy a performance by the internally acclaimed Baltimore
Symphony Orchestra at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall or consider topping your
evening off with a show at the Morris A. Mechanic Theatre, a major stop for
national touring companies and pre-Broadway productions.
Dining options include elegant gourmet cuisine,
ethnic foods from around the world and plenty of fresh seafood from
Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay. The city is known for its fabulous crabs,
and dining at one of the many seafood restaurants or crab houses is a
must for all who visit. If you are a pasta lover, make sure you save
time for a visit to Little Italy. The Inner Harbor is loaded with
culinary choices including many outdoor waterfront cafes. Baltimore has
restaurants to satisfy nearly every craving and you are sure to
experience a memorable meal!
Join us in Baltimore! The outstanding program we have
planned combined with the soothing waterfront setting of the Inner
Harbor will combine for a great experience you won’t want to miss.
